ASA election winners react to results

Interviews with the winners of this year’s Augustana Students’ Association Winter elections

Alex Ho

What was your reaction to the election results?

The elections were fun. I’m glad that they have finally finished and the stress can finally pass. The results were pretty predictable. The tightest race was for the VP Finance position but I believe that all candidates were deserving of the position.

How will we know if your term is a success?

My success can’t be summed in a checklist. I will do everything in my power to represent my constituents in all forms of governance and not just plan great events. People may not realize but there is a lot more to the ASA than just taking your money and throwing great bashes. When I say each and every council member goes above and beyond to do their job as best they can I really do mean it.

What was your reaction to the election results?

I was very pleased with the election results. I was beyond excited to be voted in and I can’t wait to get to work alongside the other executives and councillors that were also elected. I was also super pleased with the voter turnout this year, it is always awesome to see the turnout increase.

How will we know if your term is a success?

I think the answer to this question is fairly simple, my term will have been a success if I am able to accomplish what was stated in my platform. A big point for me was ensuring the transition to the new calendar goes as smoothly as possible, and I’ll be working very hard over the summer and throughout the year to make sure that happens. I also want to really make sure to be very present in the school throughout the year so students know who to go to with their academic concerns.

Hannan Mohamud

What was your reaction to the election results?

When we were notified of the election results I was both very happy and proud to have been voted in as the Vice President communications. It is such a huge honour to have been voted into this position and I hope I can make the Augustana committee more aware of mental health.

How will we know if your term is a success?

I believe that if I am able to make a change it will be shown through my actions and the goals that I set for myself. Being able to take in student input and adjust my goals to what they believe is relevant is very important. And lastly to remain transparent with students and be able to take feedback from them.

There will be an increase in student representation.

Chiedza Mutize

What was your reaction to the election results?

When I found out I won I was really excited. Even though I was running uncontested, there was a choice for people to vote none of the above. However, the majority of the people voted for me and my platform, which made me really happy.

How will we know if your term is a success?

I will know my term is a success if by the end of next year I am able to achieve all my platform points of bringing even more programs for mental wellness, if there is more open conversation about sexual assault awareness, and if I am able to influence and reach out to as many students as possible on campus.

Amara Onyia

How will we know if your term is a success?

Hopefully there will be noticeable improvements in a few things.

Danisha Suchak

What was your reaction to the election results?

I was so humbled and grateful to everyone who voted for me. Seeing the statistics were very surprising, but knowing that I have made an impact on students has made me want to work even harder for the upcoming year.

How will we know if your term is a success?

My term will be a success if there is an increase in the number of applications for student grants and club initiative applications. Furthermore, it will also be a success if there is more use of student discounts that are available and there is more of an understanding on what the ASA does for students, such that it is not limited to events.
