Augustana is a small campus, but there are plenty of opportunities to take courses you can’t find elsewhere.

If you’re looking for something to fill your schedule, Augustana has some unique and interesting options that will be different, and may even teach you something you never thought you’d know.

Here is a list of the ten most unique Augustana courses:

AUSCA 142: Viking Age Mythology

Viking Age Mythology covers old Norse mythology and the history of the Vikings — learn about them, because as an Augustana student, you are one.

AUENG 269/369: The End of the World: Contemporary Apocalyptic Literature

If you’re a zombie enthusiast, this is the English course for you. It aims to covers literature that is about the end of the world as we know it. This English course will be the most thrilling English course you ever take — certainly not your classic Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen.

AUPAC 152: Luge

It may be surprising, but yes, you can earn 1 credit for learning how to slide down an icy surface on a small sled, all while lying on your back. Luge is a sport that will expose your wild and adventurous side — plus, you could always become an Olympic champion.

AUSCA 101/102: Beginner’s Norwegian

If you’re tired of trying to learn French, try something different and unique. Norwegian is a Scandinavian language that will be useful if you ever want to visit Norway. Augustana is one of the only universities that offers it!

AUPED 281: Dogsledding

Students go on a two week-long expedition to the Northwest Territories. You learn how to handle your own team of dogs, survive in the severe conditions, and study Canadian northern cultural identity. There is also a strong focus on personal narratives and story writing.

AUIDS 286/386, AUREL 271: Spirit of the Land

The Spirit of the Land course is about learning practical ways to develop community and ecological kinship. During the course you have a chance to engage with community members, share meals, and host a conference.

AUDRA 233: Clown and Mask

Use your improvisation skills to explore the art of clowning techniques, impulse acting and performance using masks. This won’t be your everyday drama class — clowning is in a whole new realm.

AUPED 360: Hockey: Culture and Commerce

Explore all elements of the hockey world and learn about the cultural and business aspects of the popular sport in the past and the present. This course is perfectly Canadian.

AUPAC 134: Indoor Climbing

Learn indoor wall climbing techniques and how to properly and safely use climbing equipment. Climbing is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy an adrenaline rush.

AUENG 318: Creative Writing Long Manuscript, Novel

In this class, you will write a manuscript for a fiction novel that will be workshopped, edited, and critiqued by your classmates. If you have a dream to become the next J.K. Rowling, this is the course for you.
